Florida City is an aged city. Its first historical stages were highlighted by arguments between the Southern and Northern colonists. The first of them were originally from Kansas and based their lives in Homestead but they moved out into the rough country area that was Florida City in 1910. Many families from the south looking for farmhouses followed them. The Model Land Company from Michigan bought 22,000 acres and due to several advertisement in Detroit made northerners felt attracted to the “Garden of Eden”. Detroiters named the area Detroit but they were very disappointed with their buying and moved back.
In 1914 the city was integrated as such and the remaining families living there named the city Florida. In 1922 the city reached a population of 800, a three-story hotel was built by then along with a hardware store and a drug store. However, the economy of Florida mostly remained to farmers’ activities. Hurricanes destroyed a big part of the early constructions so that’s why Florida City had to base its economical living on the agriculture. Several years have passed since then and Florida City is so proud for its success which is continually growing. It is a non-sleep City.
